KUSH/NUBIA

OVERVEIW

Kush was an ancient empire Founded about 2400 BCE, and eventually Conquered in about 350 CE by the Aksum (The Ancient Kingdom of Kush, 2017). It was located at Modern day Sudan on the Upper nile river valley in the Nubia region because it was On the Nile, it had trade routes and irrigation, and as a result wass pretty good at agriculture. Nubia had many resources, such as gold and silver which were, and still are, extremely valuable. Meroe, a city in nubia, was also close to the Red Sea, and as such had access to trade centers further south. Its culture was actually pretty even: everyone was encouraged to read ans write, and temples were EVERYWHERE. Since they were just about set with food, between hunting and farming, a lot of time was spent developing their culture. Nubia fell due to many factors, first and foremost being a close proximity to egypt. Egypt was invaded and depleted of resources, so new invaders looked to the next best thing- kush. Kush Fought off invaders but eventually fell. Another factor was abuse of rescources: Cattle overgrazed- ruined farm land, and deforestation.

SPECIAL FACTS

Nubia had three major cities: Kerma, Napata, and Meroe. Kerma contained a major temple, which is still standing today, and became extremly wealthy on gold, bronze, and ivory. It rapidly became a trade center between central and northern Africa because of this. The second, Napata, was the Kushite and egyptian religious center - it contained many temples, and a few universities. Meroe, the third city, had iron, the fines pottry in the ancient world, and over 200 pyramids, each containing an aciemnt ruler.
